Kuwait’s 1st film festival to foster cinema industry
Kuwait’s first film festival, due to start on March 24 is significant to construct the infrastructure for a cinema industry in the country, said National Council for Culture, Art and Letters (NCCAL) senior official. The festival, that runs through March 28, will be act as a major component of the cultural scene in Kuwait, NCCAL’s Assistant Secretary-General Mohammad Al-Assousi said at a pre-event press conference on Tuesday.
It will also encourage the youth into movie production, he pointed out. Al-Assousi noted that the NCCAL, in cooperation with the French embassy has dispatched several Kuwaiti cinema figures abroad to have training on the industry. Some 34 movies will compete in the film festival that will includes seven workshops and 14 lectures on cinema to be addressed by specialists. Generous prizes will be offered in three categories, long and mini documentaries and short feature films, in addition to the jury award, Al-Assousi said.
Festival director Shaker Abul said the state support to the event reflects keenness by the country’s political leadership on supporting youth talents and creativity. This first edition focuses on local participation to shed light on the Kuwaiti cinema.
